Projecting the right image

7 February 2025

Last Monday was the turn of the projected image workers to have the first round of their 2025 competition.

In the General Class there were 21 entries for our external judge (Cat Humphries) to review.  She held-back six for a second look.  The final top scores were one score of 18 points (out of a possible 20) tow 19s and three 20s.  Two of the 20s were to pictures by Jonathan Lennon who was clearly pleased to get this double top score – his first time.  Of his two pictures, both showing his “trademark” style of removing just some of an image’s colour, Jonathon said:

It’s not safe to cross yet” – This picture was taken somewhere in Hertfordshire. The purpose of this image is to document what pedestrians on the pavement should look out for before crossing the road. ………. The overall image was put in monochrome but the man symbol [of a pelican crossing] was kept in red to ensure the image has simplicity and visual appeal.

Somewhere in London” – This picture was taken to document what London looks like during the night. The purpose of this image is to attract tourists to visit London. The background was put in monochrome with the subject [the Transport for London roundel] kept in colour. It was action that was made because it is important that the viewer immediately focuses on the famous characteristic of the city.”

In the Advanced Class, Cat had her work cut out as she had 63 images to judge.  She said that she was going to be demanding of the entrants as “..this is a tough competition this evening.  Otherwise strong pictures will not progress to a second view” adding “pictures will be needing that “extra something” to succeed”.  Cat gave a wide range of scores from 14 up to full marks of 20, holding-back 14 for a second look.  In the end seven pictures were awarded 20 points with Graham Adamson and Malcolm Rapier emulating Jonathon by gaining a total of 40 points.
